Getting Around Slovakia
Slovakia is compact and well connected by rail and bus. The CP.sk route planner is essential — it covers trains (ZSSK), intercity buses (RegioJet, FlixBus), and even city public transport in one search.
Bratislava Public Transport
Bratislava has trams, buses, and trolleybuses operated by DPB. The easiest way to buy tickets is through the IDS BK app — just activate a ticket before boarding. Paper tickets from machines must be validated on board. Inspectors are common and fines for riding without a valid ticket are EUR 50.
Getting to the High Tatras
Take a train from Bratislava to Poprad-Tatry (3.5-4h) or a RegioJet bus (4h). From Poprad, the TEŽ electric railway connects all Tatra resort villages (Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica). A day pass for TEŽ costs about EUR 5.
Tips
- RegioJet trains offer free hot drinks and newspapers on board
- Bratislava to Vienna is only 1 hour by train — great for a day trip
- Bolt scooters are available in Bratislava for short rides
- Download Mapy.cz for hiking — it has the best trail maps for the Tatras
