Tips for Getting Around the Netherlands

The Netherlands has one of Europe’s densest rail networks, making train travel the fastest and most convenient way to move between cities. NS trains connect all major cities with high frequency β€” Amsterdam to Rotterdam takes just 40 minutes, and trains to Utrecht depart every few minutes. Buy an OV-chipkaart (anonymous version EUR 7.50) and load credit for seamless travel on all public transport nationwide, or use contactless bank cards directly on all turnstiles and card readers.

Cycling Like a Local

The Netherlands is the world’s cycling capital, and renting a bike is often the best way to explore Dutch cities. OV-fiets (available at most train stations for OV-chipkaart holders) costs just EUR 4.55 per 24 hours. In Amsterdam, watch out for tram tracks when cycling β€” they can catch your wheel. Always use designated bike lanes, signal your turns, and lock your bike with two locks to prevent theft.

Practical Tips

  • Most Dutch people speak excellent English, so language is rarely a barrier
  • Almost everywhere accepts card payments (including debit cards), but some smaller shops prefer Dutch bank cards over Visa/Mastercard
  • Off-peak train travel (before 6:30, 9:00-16:00, after 18:30) is 40% cheaper with a Dal Voordeel discount subscription (EUR 5.30/month)
  • The Museumkaart (EUR 67.90) gives free entry to 400+ museums nationwide and pays for itself after 4-5 visits
  • Weather changes rapidly β€” always carry a rain jacket, even in summer
