Slovak Paradise National Park
Slovak Paradise National Park, Hrabusice, Spisska Nova Ves District, Slovakia
Open in Google Maps →Slovak Paradise National Park is one of the most thrilling hiking destinations in Central Europe, a labyrinth of narrow limestone gorges, plunging waterfalls, and dense primeval forests that are navigated via an extraordinary system of fixed metal ladders, chains, wooden bridges, and walkways bolted directly into the canyon walls. This is not your typical national park stroll: routes through gorges like Sucha Bela, Piecky, and Kysel require visitors to climb vertical iron ladders up the sides of waterfalls, shuffle along narrow ledges above roaring streams, and haul themselves up chains through spray-drenched ravines, all while surrounded by moss-covered rock walls and ancient beech and fir forests. The experience is somewhere between hiking and via ferrata, and the combination of physical challenge, dramatic scenery, and the sheer exhilaration of ascending through a waterfall on a slippery metal ladder makes Slovak Paradise utterly unique.
The park covers 197 square kilometers and contains over 300 kilometers of marked trails, including both the famous technical gorge routes and gentler ridge-top paths that offer panoramic views across the forested landscape to the High Tatras in the distance. The gorge routes operate as one-way systems to manage the flow of hikers through narrow passages, which means you ascend through the dramatic canyon sections and return via forest trails along the rim. The Dobsinska Ice Cave, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the parkβs northern edge, adds another dimension to a visit, with its year-round formations of ice pillars, frozen waterfalls, and ice-covered floors.
Pro tip: Start with the Sucha Bela gorge for the best introduction to Slovak Paradise, as it offers a perfect balance of ladder climbing, waterfall crossings, and dramatic canyon scenery in a manageable 2-3 hour circuit. Wear waterproof shoes and bring a dry bag for your camera, as you will get wet. The gorges are one-way and can get busy by midday in summer, so start before 09:00 for the most enjoyable experience.
