Oktoberfest
Held on the Theresienwiese since 1810 (originally to celebrate a royal wedding), Oktoberfest is the world’s largest folk festival — six million visitors over 16 days, 14 huge beer tents each with their own character, and an entire town of carnival rides and traditional Bavarian food stalls.
Pro tip: tents fill by 9 AM on weekends — go on a weekday or reserve a table months ahead. The first weekend is the biggest party; the last weekend is the most relaxed. Wear traditional Tracht (lederhosen or dirndl) — locals will, and so should you.
