Abisko National Park is one of the premier destinations on Earth for witnessing the northern lights, blessed with a unique microclimate that produces a persistent opening in the cloud cover known locally as the Blue Hole of Abisko. Located 195 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland, this compact but spectacular park encompasses alpine terrain, birch forests, a turquoise mountain lake, and the dramatic canyon carved by the Abisko River as it tumbles toward Lake Tornetrask.

In winter, the Aurora Sky Station, reached by chairlift to 900 meters elevation above the park, offers what many consider the best northern lights viewing experience in the world, with heated observation platforms and expert guides who explain the science behind the dancing curtains of green, purple, and pink light. In summer, the park transforms entirely, bathed in 24-hour daylight during the midnight sun season and offering outstanding hiking along the Kungsleden (King’s Trail), Sweden’s most famous long-distance path. The park’s relatively small size and excellent trails make it accessible for hikers of all abilities, with the walk through the Abisko canyon being a particular highlight.

Pro tip: If visiting for the northern lights, plan to stay at least three nights to maximize your chances of a clear display. The STF Abisko Turiststation mountain lodge offers comfortable accommodation and organizes aurora tours. For a truly unforgettable experience, book a guided dog-sledding or snowmobile tour into the surrounding wilderness followed by an evening of aurora watching.
