DownloadReunification Express Scenic Route
The full Hanoi-to-Ho Chi Minh City train takes about 34 hours, but you do not need to ride the whole thing. The best scenic stretch is Hue to Da Nang (2.5 hours), crossing the Hai Van Pass with stunning ocean and mountain views. Book a soft seat for this segment. For longer legs, soft sleeper berths (4-berth cabin) are comfortable. Book tickets at the station or on the DSVN website at least a few days in advance, especially around holidays and Tet.
Motorbike Culture
Motorbikes are the lifeblood of Vietnamese cities. As a traveler, GrabBike is the easiest way to experience it — cheap, fast, and helmets are provided. If you want to rent your own, expect to pay VND 100,000-150,000 per day. International Driving Permits are technically required but enforcement varies. Traffic looks chaotic but flows predictably — walk across streets slowly and steadily, and traffic will flow around you.
Practical Tips
- Only use Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green) metered taxis to avoid scams; or just use Grab
- Vietnam runs on cash for street food and small shops; ATMs are everywhere and dispense up to VND 3,000,000 at a time
- Coffee culture is huge — try ca phe sua da (iced milk coffee) at any local cafe for VND 20,000-35,000
- SIM cards are cheap (VND 100,000 for 30 days of data) — buy at the airport or any phone shop
- Bargain at markets but not at restaurants; start at 50% of the quoted price in tourist markets
