DownloadTips for Getting Around the UK
The UK rail network is extensive but ticket pricing is notoriously complex. The golden rule is to book Advance tickets as early as possible β they go on sale 12 weeks ahead and can be 60-80% cheaper than walk-up fares. Use Trainline or the individual train operator websites to find the best prices. Split ticketing (buying separate tickets for segments of the same journey) can also save money. Off-peak travel is significantly cheaper than peak hours (before 09:30 on weekdays).
London Transport Essentials
Londonβs transport system is one of the worldβs best. Use a contactless bank card or Oyster card for the cheapest fares β single paper tickets are much more expensive. Daily spending is automatically capped at GBP 8.50 for Zones 1-2, so you never overpay. The Tube runs from around 05:00 to midnight (Night Tube on Fridays and Saturdays on select lines). Buses are just GBP 1.75 per ride with a daily cap of GBP 5.25, making them the cheapest way to see the city.
Practical Tips
- The UK uses the British pound (GBP) β card payments are accepted virtually everywhere, including contactless on public transport
- Tipping 10-12.5% at restaurants is standard; check whether service charge is already included on the bill
- Driving is on the left β be especially careful as a pedestrian when crossing roads
- Weather is unpredictable year-round β layers and a waterproof jacket are essential regardless of season
- The UK has excellent free museums in London (British Museum, Natural History Museum, Tate Modern) and other cities
- Pubs typically stop serving food by 21:00-21:30, so plan dinner accordingly
