DownloadTips for Getting Around Turkey
Turkey is a large country and distances between regions can be vast. For long distances, domestic flights are the best option β Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, and AnadoluJet offer frequent and affordable flights connecting Istanbul to Cappadocia, Antalya, and eastern Turkey. The YHT high-speed train network is expanding, with excellent service between Ankara, Konya, and Eskisehir. For shorter intercity trips, Turkeyβs long-distance bus network is outstanding, with comfortable coaches departing from every otogar (bus station).
Navigating Istanbul
Istanbul straddles two continents and its transport system reflects the cityβs complexity. The Istanbulkart is essential β it works on metro, tram, bus, ferry, and the Marmaray undersea rail tunnel. Top up at machines found at every station and many kiosks. The T1 tram runs through the tourist heart of the city from Kabatas through Sultanahmet to Eminonu. Ferries across the Bosphorus are both a transport link and a highlight, costing just TRY 17.70 with an Istanbulkart.
Practical Tips
- Turkish lira fluctuates significantly β check current exchange rates before your trip and consider exchanging money in Turkey rather than at home
- Haggling is expected in bazaars like the Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, but not in regular shops or restaurants
- Tipping 10% at sit-down restaurants is customary; round up for taxis
- Tea (cay) is offered everywhere and is a cornerstone of Turkish hospitality β accepting a glass is a great social gesture
- In Istanbul, avoid taxis that refuse to use the meter or claim itβs broken β use BiTaksi to hail verified taxis instead
- Book Cappadocia hot air balloon flights well in advance during peak season (April-October)
