Getting Around Bangkok

Bangkok has three main transit systems: the BTS Skytrain (elevated), MRT (underground), and ARL (Airport Rail Link). They use separate ticketing, though the Rabbit card works on BTS and some shops. For areas not near stations, use Grab or hop on a motorbike taxi (orange vest riders) for quick trips through traffic. Canal boats (Khlong Saen Saep) are a surprisingly fast way to cross central Bangkok during rush hour.

Island and Beach Logistics

Getting to Thai islands involves a combo of bus/train plus ferry. Book combined tickets through 12Go Asia for seamless journeys. Bangkok to Koh Samui can be done by overnight train to Surat Thani then ferry, or by direct flight. For Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, ferries depart from Surat Thani or Chumphon. Phuket and Krabi are accessible by budget flights from Bangkok (1-1.5 hours).

Practical Tips

  • Always insist on the meter in Bangkok taxis β€” drivers near tourist areas may try to quote a flat rate
  • 7-Eleven stores are everywhere and accept cash and cards; great for cheap meals, SIM cards, and supplies
  • Bangkok BTS/MRT stops running around midnight; Grab works 24/7 for late-night transport
  • Street food is safe and delicious β€” look for stalls with high turnover and locals eating there
  • Negotiate tuk-tuk prices before boarding; a fair short ride in Bangkok is THB 60-100
