Getting Around Dar es Salaam
Dar es Salaam is a sprawling city with significant traffic congestion, especially during rush hours. The DART bus rapid transit system runs along dedicated lanes on major corridors and is the fastest way to cross the city during peak times. For everything else, Uber and Bolt provide safe, metered rides at reasonable prices. Bajaj tuk-tuks are great for short hops in neighborhoods and are easier to maneuver through traffic. Avoid driving yourself in Dar unless you are comfortable with assertive local driving styles.
Reaching Zanzibar and Safari Destinations
The Dar-Zanzibar ferry crossing with Azam Marine is one of Africa’s classic short journeys, taking roughly two hours by fast ferry. Book first class for air conditioning and assigned seating. For safari destinations in the northern circuit like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, most visitors fly into Kilimanjaro Airport near Arusha, where their safari operator arranges all ground transfers. Small bush planes operated by Coastal Aviation and Auric Air connect safari airstrips across the country, saving long hours on dusty roads.
Practical Tips for Tanzania
Tanzania operates on a dual-currency system in practice, with tourist services priced in US dollars and everyday purchases in Tanzanian shillings. Bring crisp, post-2006 US dollar bills for safari payments and entry fees to national parks. M-Pesa mobile money is ubiquitous for local transactions and can be useful if you get a local SIM card. Learning a few Swahili phrases goes a long way. Tipping is expected for safari guides (USD 15-20 per day) and hotel staff. The dry seasons of June through October and January through February offer the best weather for both safaris and beach holidays on Zanzibar.
