Safety and Getting Around
South Africa is best navigated using ride-hailing apps rather than walking, especially after dark. Uber and Bolt are available in every major city and are the safest, most convenient transport option for visitors. In Johannesburg, the Gautrain provides a fast, secure rail link between the airport, Sandton, Rosebank, and Pretoria. In Cape Town, the MyCiTi bus system covers the City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, and airport corridor. Avoid minibus taxis as a tourist unless you are familiar with the routes and the local system.
Road Trips and Intercity Travel
South Africa is a road trip paradise. The Garden Route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth is one of the worldβs great coastal drives, and car rental is affordable by international standards. For intercity travel without a car, domestic flights are frequent and cheap when booked early with FlySafair or Kulula. Intercape and Greyhound run comfortable bus services on major routes, though journey times are long given the distances involved. The Blue Train and Rovos Rail offer luxury rail experiences for those with the budget.
Practical Tips
South Africa uses the rand (ZAR) and card payments are widely accepted, including at many markets and street vendors via SnapScan. Load shedding (scheduled power outages) can affect restaurants and shops, so keep devices charged and carry a small power bank. Tipping is customary at 10-15% in restaurants and ZAR 10-20 for car guards. The country has world-class food and wine, particularly in the Cape Winelands, and eating out is remarkably affordable compared to Europe or North America.
