DownloadGetting Around Metro Manila
Metro Manila traffic is notoriously heavy, so plan your travel times carefully. The LRT and MRT rail lines are the fastest way to cross the city during rush hours β the LRT-1 runs north-south through Manila, while the MRT-3 follows EDSA, the main highway. Trains get extremely crowded during peak hours (7-9 AM, 5-7 PM). Grab is the go-to ride-hailing app and works reliably across the metro. For short trips, Angkas motorcycle taxis weave through traffic far faster than cars. Jeepneys are the iconic and cheapest way to get around β modernized e-jeepneys now accept beep cards for cashless payment.
Island Travel
The Philippines has over 7,000 islands, making ferries and domestic flights essential. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines connect major destinations, with seat sales offering fares as low as PHP 1,500 one way. For the Visayas, 2GO ferries operate overnight sailings from Manila to Cebu, Iloilo, and Bacolod β cabin class is comfortable for the long journey. To reach islands like Boracay, El Nido, or Siargao, expect a flight plus a boat transfer. Bangka boats (outriggers) handle short island hops and can be chartered for day trips.
Tips
- English is widely spoken throughout the Philippines, making communication easy for most travelers
- GCash is the dominant mobile payment platform β set it up to pay at restaurants, stores, and even street vendors
- Always carry cash in smaller bills (PHP 20, 50, 100) for jeepneys, tricycles, and sari-sari stores that do not accept digital payments
- During typhoon season (June-November), check weather forecasts before booking ferry trips or flights to smaller islands, as cancellations are common
