DownloadGetting Around Lima
Lima is a sprawling coastal city where traffic is a constant challenge. The Metropolitano BRT system runs a dedicated lane from north to south and is the fastest way to traverse the city during rush hour. Metro Line 1 covers the east side but is less useful for tourists. For most visitors staying in Miraflores or Barranco, Uber and Beat are the safest and most practical options. Combis (minibuses) are extremely cheap but chaotic and difficult to navigate without local knowledge. Walking is pleasant along the Malecon coastal cliffs between Miraflores and Barranco, but Lima is too spread out for walking between districts.
The Machu Picchu Journey
Getting to Machu Picchu requires planning. Most travelers fly to Cusco, then take a train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (the town at the base of Machu Picchu). Peru Rail and Inca Rail operate this route, with tickets ranging from PEN 200 for basic service to PEN 800 for luxury options. Book at least a month in advance during peak season (June-August). From Aguas Calientes, buses shuttle visitors up to the citadel for USD 24 round trip. The alternative is the multi-day Inca Trail trek, which requires booking a licensed tour operator months ahead. Budget travelers can take a bus from Cusco to Hidroelectrica and walk the railroad tracks for 3 hours to Aguas Calientes.
Practical Tips
- Take altitude seriously in Cusco (3,400m); rest on your first day, drink coca tea, and avoid alcohol for 24 hours
- Peruβs cuisine is world-class; do not miss ceviche in Lima, and try local markets for cheap, delicious set-lunch menus (menu del dia) for PEN 8-12
- Carry small bills in Peruvian soles; ATMs dispense PEN 20 and PEN 50 notes which are easier to use than the larger PEN 100 and PEN 200
- The tourist police (Policia de Turismo) in Cusco and Lima are helpful and some speak English
- Buy a Boleto Turistico in Cusco (PEN 130) for access to 16 archaeological sites and museums in the region β it is valid for 10 days
