Tips for Getting Around Norway

Norway is a long, mountainous country, and distances between cities can be vast. The train network covers the main corridors, with famously scenic routes like the Bergen Railway (Oslo-Bergen) and the Nordland Railway (Trondheim-Bodo). Book Vy Minipris tickets as early as possible for the best fares β€” a NOK 800 ticket can drop to NOK 249 if booked weeks ahead. For northern Norway, domestic flights are often the most practical option.

Saving Money in Norway

Norway is one of Europe’s most expensive countries, but smart planning helps. Buy groceries at Rema 1000 or Kiwi (the cheapest supermarket chains). Drinking tap water saves significant money β€” Norwegian tap water is excellent. Many museums offer free entry on certain days, and the Oslo Pass includes free public transport and museum access. Cooking in hostel kitchens rather than eating out can save hundreds of kroner per day.

Practical Tips

  • Norway is virtually cashless β€” card and mobile payments are accepted everywhere, even at small market stalls
  • The right to roam (allemannsretten) allows free camping in nature, at least 150m from the nearest house
  • Weather in fjord areas changes rapidly, so layer your clothing and always carry rain gear
  • Alcohol is expensive and only sold in Vinmonopolet (state liquor stores) for spirits and wine; beer is available in supermarkets until 20:00 on weekdays
  • Book fjord cruises and popular hiking shuttles in summer well in advance, especially for Trolltunga and Preikestolen
