DownloadDriving and Road Trips
New Zealand is best explored by car. Rental cars start from NZD 30-50/day, and campervans from NZD 80-150/day. Drive on the left side of the road. Many scenic routes are winding single-lane roads, so allow extra time. Key drives include the Milford Sound highway from Queenstown (4.5h), the Forgotten World Highway in Taranaki, and the coastal road from Kaikoura to Christchurch. Fuel stations can be sparse in rural areas, so fill up when you can. An international driving permit is recommended if your license is not in English.
Cook Strait Ferry Crossing
The ferry between the North and South Islands (Wellington to Picton) takes about 3.5 hours and is one of the most scenic ferry rides in the world, passing through the Marlborough Sounds. Interislander and Bluebridge operate the route. Book in advance during summer (December-February) as it sells out. Foot passengers pay NZD 55-80; bringing a car adds NZD 120-220. The sailing can be rough in bad weather, so take seasickness precautions if needed.
Practical Tips
- New Zealand uses contactless payment widely β Visa/Mastercard tap works almost everywhere
- Tap water is safe and excellent throughout the country; bring a reusable bottle
- Free Wi-Fi is limited compared to Asia β buy a local SIM (Spark or Vodafone, NZD 30-40 for 4-8 weeks data) at the airport
- Weather changes rapidly, especially in the South Island β always carry layers and rain gear
- Freedom camping (sleeping in a vehicle) is only legal in certified self-contained vehicles at designated spots; use CamperMate to find legal sites
