Tips for Getting Around Italy

Italy’s high-speed rail network is one of the best ways to travel between major cities. Book early on Trenitalia or Italo for “Super Economy” fares that can be 60-70% cheaper than last-minute tickets.

Buying Metro Tickets

In Rome, buy tickets at tabacchi shops (look for the big “T” sign) or at metro station machines. Validate your ticket when boarding buses and trams. In Milan, use the ATM Milano app to buy digital tickets directly on your phone.

Money-Saving Transport Tips

  • The Roma Pass includes unlimited public transport plus museum entries
  • In Venice, a 3-day ACTV pass (EUR 40) is worth it if you plan to use vaporetti
  • Trenitalia’s “CartaFreccia” loyalty program earns points toward free tickets
  • Regional trains don’t require seat reservations and are much cheaper for short trips
