Getting Around Indonesian Cities

Gojek and Grab are the backbone of urban transport in Indonesia. Motorbike rides (ojek) are the fastest way to beat Jakarta’s legendary traffic and typically cost under IDR 20,000 for short trips. For longer distances or when carrying luggage, use the car option. Both apps accept cash and digital wallets — setting up GoPay or OVO beforehand saves time. In Jakarta, the TransJakarta BRT system covers major corridors at a flat IDR 3,500 fare, and the relatively new MRT line connects the south to central Jakarta quickly.

Island Hopping and Intercity Travel

Indonesia spans over 17,000 islands, so domestic flights are essential for covering long distances. Budget carriers like Lion Air and Citilink offer affordable fares, especially when booked through Traveloka or Tiket.com. On Java, KAI trains provide a comfortable alternative — the executive class between Jakarta and Yogyakarta is a scenic 7-hour journey with air conditioning and meals. For Bali to the Gili Islands or Nusa Penida, fast boats are the standard option and can be booked through local tour operators or online.

Tips

  • Always carry some cash in smaller denominations — many warungs (local eateries) and small shops do not accept cards
  • Download offline maps for areas outside major cities, as mobile data coverage can be spotty in rural regions and smaller islands
  • Bluebird taxis are the safest and most reliable metered taxis — avoid unmarked cabs, especially at airports and tourist areas
  • Bargaining is expected at traditional markets but not in malls or convenience stores
