Getting Around Reykjavik

Reykjavik is compact and walkable β€” most attractions in the city center are within a 20-minute walk. The Straeto bus system covers the greater Reykjavik area with reasonable frequency during the day, but service drops off significantly in evenings and weekends. There is no train system in Iceland. For anything beyond the capital, a rental car is essential.

Driving the Ring Road

Route 1 (the Ring Road) circles the entire island in approximately 1,322 km and is the main way to see Iceland’s highlights. In summer, the full loop takes 7-10 days comfortably. A standard 2WD car is fine for the Ring Road and most paved routes, but a 4WD is required for F-roads (highland tracks) and highly recommended in winter. Always check road.is before setting out.

Tips

  • Iceland is extremely expensive β€” a casual meal costs ISK 2500-4000 and a beer ISK 1200-1500 at bars
  • Tap water in Iceland is some of the purest in the world β€” never buy bottled water
  • Card payment is accepted almost everywhere, including remote areas β€” you rarely need cash
  • Fuel stations are spaced out in rural areas β€” fill up whenever you pass one, especially in the Eastfjords and Westfjords
  • Weather can change in minutes β€” always layer and carry waterproof and windproof clothing
