Perched atop Wawel Hill overlooking the Vistula River, Wawel Royal Castle served as the residence of Polish kings for over five centuries and remains the country’s most important symbol of national identity. The castle complex is a stunning blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, reflecting the many rulers who shaped it over the centuries. Inside, the State Rooms dazzle with Renaissance tapestries, period furniture, and an extraordinary collection of Flemish Arras tapestries commissioned by King Sigismund Augustus.

The hill also houses the Wawel Cathedral, where Polish monarchs were crowned and laid to rest, including the crypts of national heroes Tadeusz Kościuszko and Józef Piłsudski. The Crown Treasury and Armoury display royal regalia and medieval weaponry, while the mysterious Dragon’s Den cave at the base of the hill delights visitors of all ages with its legend of the Wawel Dragon.

Pro tip: Purchase tickets online in advance, as each exhibition has a daily visitor limit. Visit the State Rooms first thing in the morning, then explore the cathedral and grounds at a leisurely pace — the courtyard arcades are particularly photogenic in the golden afternoon light.
