Tegallalang Rice Terraces
Jl. Raya Tegallalang, Tegallalang, Gianyar Regency, Bali 80561, Indonesia
Open in Google Maps →Cascading down a steep river valley just north of Ubud, the Tegallalang Rice Terraces are one of Baliβs most iconic landscapes and a stunning example of the traditional Balinese cooperative irrigation system known as subak, which has been recognized by UNESCO. The emerald-green terraces are carved into the hillside in dramatic steps, with coconut palms framing the scene and a gentle river winding through the valley below. Walking paths wind through the paddies, crossing bamboo bridges and passing small shrines where farmers leave daily offerings to the rice goddess Dewi Sri. The terraces change character with the seasons β bright green shoots in the planting season, golden stalks before harvest, and flooded mirror-like paddies reflecting the sky in between. Local farmers maintain these terraces using ancient techniques passed down through generations.
Pro tip: Walk past the main entrance viewpoint and head down the path into the valley itself β the crowds thin out dramatically after the first 200 meters, and you will find peaceful spots to sit among the paddies with hardly anyone around.
