Tozeur Oasis
Tozeur Oasis, Tozeur 2200, Tozeur Governorate, Tunisia
Open in Google Maps →Tozeur is one of the great desert oases of the Sahara, a lush emerald miracle set against the stark ochre landscape of southwestern Tunisia. The oasis covers over 1,000 hectares and is fed by more than 200 natural springs, sustaining an estimated 400,000 date palms along with fruit trees, vegetable gardens, and flowering plants in a complex three-tiered agricultural system that has been cultivated for thousands of years. Walking through the shaded pathways of the palmerie, where dappled sunlight filters through the dense canopy and irrigation channels gurgle alongside ancient stone walls, feels like stepping into another world entirely after the harsh emptiness of the surrounding desert. The famous Deglet Nour dates produced here, translucent and honey-sweet, are considered among the finest in the world and form the backbone of the local economy.
Beyond the oasis itself, Tozeur serves as the gateway to some of Tunisiaβs most dramatic Saharan landscapes. The old town, or Ouled el-Hadef quarter, is a labyrinth of traditional brick architecture with distinctive geometric patterns adorning every facade. Nearby excursions take visitors to the Chott el Jerid salt lake, a vast shimmering expanse of crystallized salt that produces otherworldly mirages, and to the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza, and Mides, where waterfalls tumble through dramatic desert canyons. Star Wars fans will recognize several filming locations from the original trilogy scattered throughout the region.
Pro tip: Take a calèche ride through the oasis at sunset, when the golden light filters through the palms and the temperature drops to a perfect warmth. Arrange a half-day 4x4 excursion to the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza, ideally stopping at the Chott el Jerid salt flat when the midday sun creates its most spectacular mirages.
