Topkapi Palace
Cankurtaran, 34122 Fatih/Istanbul, Turkey
Open in Google Maps →For nearly four centuries, Topkapi Palace was the political heart and private residence of the Ottoman sultans who ruled an empire stretching from the gates of Vienna to the shores of the Persian Gulf. Perched on Seraglio Point where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara, the palace complex covers 700,000 square meters and comprises four main courtyards, each more exclusive and ornate than the last. What begins as an imposing administrative compound gradually reveals itself as a world of astonishing luxury: chambers lined with Iznik tiles in ethereal blues and greens, pavilions with gilded ceilings, and kiosks overlooking some of the most commanding water views in Istanbul.
The Imperial Treasury alone justifies a visit, housing the Spoonmakerβs Diamond, one of the largest in the world, alongside the jewel-encrusted Topkapi Dagger and thrones studded with rubies and emeralds. The Sacred Relics chamber contains items revered across the Islamic world, including a mantle and sword attributed to the Prophet Muhammad. Perhaps most fascinating is the Harem, a labyrinth of over 300 rooms where the sultanβs family lived in strict seclusion, its chambers decorated with the finest examples of Ottoman tilework and calligraphy. The Haremβs progression from the stark quarters of the eunuch guards to the breathtaking Imperial Hall reveals the complex social hierarchy of the Ottoman court.
Pro tip: Purchase a combined palace and Harem ticket online in advance to avoid the separate queues. Enter the Harem first when it opens, as it becomes extremely congested by mid-morning and the narrow corridors can feel claustrophobic. After touring the palace, do not miss the Fourth Courtyard terrace, which offers a peaceful garden setting and panoramic views across the Bosphorus to the Asian side of Istanbul.
