Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Tongariro National Park, North Island, New Zealand
Open in Google Maps →Often called the best one-day hike in the world, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4-kilometre trek through an otherworldly volcanic landscape. Youβll walk past steaming vents, cross vast lava flows, peer into the vivid Emerald Lakes, and summit the Red Crater with views across the entire North Island.
The terrain is so dramatic that it was used as the setting for Mordor in the Lord of the Rings films. The contrast between the barren volcanic desert and the brilliantly coloured mineral lakes is extraordinary.
Pro tip: Start early (before 7 AM) to avoid crowds and allow plenty of time. The weather can change rapidly β bring warm layers, rain gear, and plenty of water even on sunny days. Book shuttle transfers the day before.
