Open in Google Maps →Tivoli Gardens is one of the worldโs oldest operating amusement parks, opened in 1843, and a beloved institution at the heart of Copenhagen. Far more than a theme park, Tivoli is an enchanting blend of pleasure gardens, historical architecture, thrilling rides, live performances, and fine dining, all packed into a surprisingly compact space just steps from City Hall and Copenhagen Central Station. The park inspired Walt Disney himself, who visited in 1951 and used it as a model for Disneyland.
By day, the beautifully landscaped gardens, peacock-inhabited grounds, and ornamental lake create a tranquil oasis. As darkness falls, over 100,000 colored lights transform Tivoli into a fairytale wonderland. The park hosts regular concerts, ballet performances, and pantomime shows in its historic open-air theater, while its restaurants range from street food stalls to the Michelin-starred Nimb.
Pro tip: Visit on a Friday evening during summer for the free rock and pop concerts held at the open-air stage, and stay until closing time for the spectacular fireworks display over the lake. The wooden roller coaster Rutschebanen, built in 1914, is a charming piece of history and still requires a brakeman to ride along on every trip.
