Open in Google Maps →Széchenyi Thermal Baths is one of the largest public medicinal bath complexes in Europe and an essential Budapest experience. Housed in a magnificent Neo-Baroque palace built in 1913 within City Park, the complex boasts 18 pools fed by two thermal springs reaching temperatures up to 77 degrees Celsius. The outdoor pools, with their striking yellow facade and steaming turquoise waters, create one of the most photographed scenes in all of Hungary.
Beyond simple relaxation, the thermal waters are rich in calcium, magnesium, and sulfate, believed to offer therapeutic benefits for joint and muscle ailments. The complex also includes saunas, steam rooms, and massage services. Watching locals play chess on floating boards in the steaming outdoor pool is a quintessentially Hungarian sight that has endured for over a century.
Pro tip: Arrive right when the baths open at 6:00 AM to enjoy the pools in near-solitude, especially the outdoor pools where morning mist and steam create an ethereal atmosphere. Bring your own flip-flops and towel to save on rental costs, and keep valuables in the electronic lockers.
