The Seven Rila Lakes are a group of glacial lakes nestled in a dramatic cirque high in Bulgaria’s Rila Mountains, each named for its most distinctive characteristic: the Tear for its clear waters, the Eye for its nearly perfect oval shape, the Kidney, the Twin, the Trefoil, the Fish Lake, and the Lower Lake. Situated at altitudes between 2,095 and 2,535 meters, this interconnected chain of crystal-clear alpine lakes set against stark granite peaks and green meadows is one of Bulgaria’s most beloved natural treasures and a popular hiking destination.

The most common approach begins with a chairlift ride from the Rila Lakes Hut to approximately 2,100 meters, from where a well-marked trail winds upward past each lake in succession. The hike to the highest lake and back takes approximately four to five hours at a comfortable pace, rewarding trekkers with constantly changing perspectives as each lake reveals its unique personality. In summer, the surrounding meadows burst with wildflowers, and the still waters mirror the surrounding peaks with crystalline precision. The area is also significant as a gathering place for followers of the Duno movement, who hold a sunrise ceremony here each August.

Pro tip: Start early in the morning to beat the crowds and clouds that often build by afternoon. The chairlift queue can be substantial on summer weekends, so consider hiking up from the Rila Lakes Hut instead, which adds about an hour but avoids the wait. Bring layers and rain protection regardless of the forecast, as mountain weather changes rapidly at these altitudes.
