Open in Google Maps →Salina Turda is one of the most extraordinary underground attractions in the world, a massive Roman-era salt mine transformed into a subterranean theme park and wellness center that looks like something from a science fiction film. Located near the city of Turda in Transylvania, the mine dates back to the 17th century, though salt extraction in the area stretches back to Roman times. After ceasing operations in 1932, the mine was repurposed and reopened in 1992 as an utterly unique tourist destination.
Descending into the main chamber, visitors find themselves in a cathedral-like cavern where the salt-streaked walls soar to heights of over 80 meters, illuminated by futuristic lighting that casts an ethereal glow across the vast space. At the bottom, an underground lake offers boat rides on water so clear and salt-rich that it feels almost buoyant. Around the lake, a Ferris wheel, bowling alley, mini-golf course, and amphitheater create a surreal juxtaposition of modern entertainment within ancient geological formations. The mine maintains a constant temperature of around 12 degrees Celsius and the salt-rich air is believed to offer therapeutic benefits for respiratory conditions.
Pro tip: Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the pathways can be slippery from salt moisture, and bring a warm jacket as the underground temperature stays cool year-round. Visit the older, less touristed Terezia Mine section for a more atmospheric and peaceful experience away from the crowds in the main Rudolf Mine chamber.
