Stretching along the Urubamba River between Cusco and Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley was the agricultural heartland of the Inca Empire and remains one of Peru’s most breathtaking and culturally rich regions. The valley floor, at roughly 2,800 meters elevation, is significantly lower and warmer than Cusco, making it an ideal first stop for acclimatization before attempting higher-altitude treks. Along its length, a succession of remarkable Inca sites awaits: the massive terraced fortress of Ollantaytambo, where the Incas won their only military victory against the Spanish; the circular agricultural laboratory of Moray, where concentric stone terraces created microclimates for experimental crop cultivation; and the dazzling salt pans of Maras, where over 3,000 shallow pools cascade down a mountainside in a patchwork of white, pink, and amber.

Traditional Quechua communities throughout the valley maintain weaving, farming, and ceremonial traditions that have been passed down for centuries. Visiting the village of Chinchero, where women demonstrate ancestral textile dyeing techniques using natural pigments, or attending a despacho ceremony led by a local shaman offers a window into the living Andean culture that connects these communities to their Inca ancestors. The valley’s fertile climate produces exceptional corn, potatoes, and quinoa, and local restaurants serve nueva andina cuisine that elevates these humble ingredients into sophisticated dishes.

Pro tip: Purchase the Boleto Turistico in Cusco before heading to the valley β€” it saves significantly over individual site tickets and is valid for 10 days. Visit Moray and the Maras salt mines together in the morning, then spend the afternoon exploring Ollantaytambo, where you can catch the evening train to Machu Picchu directly from the village station.
