Often called the most photogenic town in Croatia, Rovinj is an Istrian jewel that rises from a former island, joined to the mainland only in the 18th century. Its old town is a tightly packed cluster of pastel-colored houses that climb a conical hill crowned by the Church of St. Euphemia, whose 60-meter bell tower, modeled after the campanile of St. Mark’s in Venice, can be seen from far out at sea. The narrow, cobblestoned streets spiral upward from the harbor, each turn revealing hidden squares, artists’ ateliers, and small galleries that have earned Rovinj a reputation as an art colony. Fishing nets still dry on the harbor walls, and the morning catch arrives at the central fish market just as it has for centuries.

The waterfront promenade wraps around the peninsula, offering views of the offshore islands that protect the harbor and of the rugged Istrian coastline stretching north and south. South of the old town, the lush Zlatni Rt forest park provides shaded walking and cycling trails through a landscape of Aleppo pines, Mediterranean oaks, and rocky swimming spots where the water is crystal clear. The Istrian culinary tradition further elevates a visit to Rovinj: the region is renowned for its truffles, olive oil, Malvasia wines, and fresh seafood prepared in the Italian-influenced style that reflects centuries of Venetian rule.

Pro tip: Climb the bell tower of St. Euphemia for a 360-degree view over the terracotta rooftops, the archipelago, and the Istrian hills. For dinner, book a table at one of the restaurants along the harborfront Obala Pina Budicina street, but for the best value, follow the locals to the konobas tucked into the back streets, where fresh grilled fish and Istrian pasta with truffles are served without the waterfront markup.
