Meteora Monasteries
Meteora, Kalabaka 422 00, Thessaly, Greece
Open in Google Maps →The Meteora monasteries are one of the most awe-inspiring sights in all of Europe. Six active Eastern Orthodox monasteries sit atop massive natural sandstone pillars that rise up to 400 meters above the Thessalian plain, looking as though they were placed there by divine intervention. Originally accessible only by retractable ladders and net baskets hoisted by rope and pulley, these monasteries were founded by hermit monks in the 14th century seeking spiritual isolation. Today, staircases carved into the rock make visiting possible, though the sense of otherworldly remoteness remains.
Each monastery offers its own character β the Great Meteoron is the largest and oldest, while Varlaam features exceptional frescoes, and the Holy Trinity Monastery (famously featured in a James Bond film) occupies the most dramatic perch. The surrounding landscape of towering rock columns, forested valleys, and sweeping plains makes this a destination where natural wonder and human devotion intersect in extraordinary fashion.
Pro tip: Rent a car or hire a local driver to visit at your own pace, as the monasteries are spread across several kilometers of winding road. Start early with the Holy Trinity or St. Nicholas Anapavsa, which are less visited, and check the closing schedule β each monastery closes on a different day of the week.
