Tours depart daily, typically 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Best time: September to November during the floating season when water levels are high and floating markets are most active

The Mekong Delta is where one of the world’s great rivers fans out into a vast, lush labyrinth of waterways, rice paddies, and tropical orchards before emptying into the South China Sea. Known locally as the “Rice Bowl of Vietnam,” this region produces more than half the country’s rice and an astonishing variety of tropical fruits. A boat tour through the delta’s narrow canals reveals a way of life built entirely around the water — families living on houseboats, children paddling to school in wooden sampans, and the famous floating markets where vendors hang their goods from tall poles so buyers can see what’s for sale from a distance.

The Cai Rang and Cai Be floating markets are the most visited, where wholesalers trade massive loads of watermelons, pineapples, and dragon fruit from boat to boat starting before dawn. Beyond the markets, the delta rewards those who linger with visits to coconut candy workshops, honey bee farms nestled among coconut palms, and quiet homestays where you can share home-cooked meals with local families as the sun sets over flooded rice fields.

Pro tip: Skip the rushed one-day tours from Ho Chi Minh City and book a two-day trip with an overnight homestay instead — you’ll experience the delta at its most authentic, including a dawn visit to the floating market when the trading is at its peak. Ben Tre province, known as the “Coconut Kingdom,” is less touristed than the main routes and offers a more intimate experience.
