Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga / Limpopo Province, South Africa
Open in Google Maps →Spanning nearly 20,000 square kilometers of African bushveld β an area roughly the size of Israel β Kruger National Park is one of the worldβs greatest wildlife sanctuaries and the flagship of South Africaβs conservation efforts. The park is home to an astonishing diversity of life, including all of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and Cape buffalo), along with over 500 bird species, 114 reptile species, and 147 mammal species. Unlike many African parks, Kruger offers exceptional self-drive safari opportunities on over 2,500 kilometers of well-maintained roads, giving visitors the thrill of spotting wildlife at their own pace. Rest camps scattered throughout the park range from basic camping sites to comfortable bungalows, all fenced against nocturnal predators and equipped with restaurants, shops, and petrol stations. Night drives and bush walks led by armed rangers offer encounters that daytime drives simply cannot match.
Pro tip: Leave camp at first light when the gates open β the first two hours after sunrise are prime time for predator activity, and the roads are blissfully empty before the day visitors arrive from nearby lodges.
