Kazimierz is Krakow’s historic Jewish quarter, a neighborhood that has undergone one of Europe’s most remarkable cultural renaissances. For centuries, this district south of the Old Town was the center of Jewish life in Poland, home to a thriving community of scholars, merchants, and artisans. The devastation of the Holocaust left the quarter in mourning, but beginning in the 1990s, Kazimierz has been reborn as Krakow’s most creative and culturally rich neighborhood, where reverent remembrance and vibrant contemporary life exist side by side.

The streets of Kazimierz tell layered stories at every turn. Seven historic synagogues stand as testaments to the neighborhood’s Jewish heritage, with the Old Synagogue, dating to the 15th century, now housing a museum of Jewish history and culture. Around the corner, the walls are covered in street art, independent galleries display cutting-edge Polish art, and converted tenement buildings house some of Krakow’s best cocktail bars, craft breweries, and restaurants. Plac Nowy, the district’s central square, hosts a popular flea market by day and transforms into the hub of Krakow’s nightlife after dark.

Pro tip: Take a walking tour focused on the Jewish heritage of Kazimierz to understand the deep history beneath the neighborhood’s contemporary buzz. Visit the nearby Podgorze district across the river to see the remnants of the Krakow Ghetto and the moving Ghetto Heroes Square, then end at Oskar Schindler’s Factory, now an excellent museum documenting the wartime occupation of Krakow.
