Best time: Morning for clearest views before afternoon clouds

Rising 200 metres from the landscape like a giant monolith, El Peñón de Guatapé is a massive granite rock with 740 steps built into its side. At the top, you’re rewarded with one of the most stunning panoramic views in Colombia — a kaleidoscope of green islands scattered across a vast blue reservoir.

The colourful town of Guatapé below, with its brightly decorated zócalos (painted lower walls), is a destination in itself.

Pro tip: Climb early in the morning to avoid heat and crowds. After descending, explore the waterfront and rent a boat to cruise the reservoir. The town’s painted facades make for great photos.
