Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto’s most iconic landmarks, famous for its thousands of vibrant vermillion torii gates that wind through the forested hillside of Mount Inari. Dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice and prosperity, it is the head shrine of over 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan.

The main trail to the summit takes about 2-3 hours round trip, passing through an almost endless corridor of torii gates. Along the way, you’ll find smaller shrines, stone fox statues, and beautiful viewpoints overlooking Kyoto.

Pro tip: Arrive before dawn for an almost mystical experience walking through the gates in solitude. The shrine is open 24 hours and is hauntingly beautiful at night.
