Dubrovnik City Walls
Ul. Placa 32, 20000 Dubrovnik, Croatia
Open in Google Maps →Dubrovnikβs magnificent city walls are among the best-preserved medieval fortification systems in the world, stretching nearly two kilometers around the entire Old Town. Built and reinforced between the 13th and 17th centuries, the walls reach heights of up to 25 meters and include five fortresses, 16 towers, and a series of bastions that once made this maritime republic virtually impregnable. Walking the full circuit takes roughly 90 minutes and offers constantly shifting perspectives β terracotta rooftops packed tightly below, the glittering Adriatic stretching to the horizon, and the lush green of Lokrum Island floating just offshore.
The walk is a masterclass in Mediterranean beauty, with each turn revealing a new vantage point over the Stradun main street, the Old Port, and the fortress of Lovrijenac perched on its sea cliff. It is easy to understand why Dubrovnik earned the nickname βPearl of the Adriaticβ and why it has served as a filming location for numerous productions seeking a setting of timeless grandeur.
Pro tip: Enter at the PloΔe Gate entrance (near the Dominican Monastery) and walk counterclockwise β most visitors start at the Pile Gate, so you will have the first half of the circuit largely to yourself. Bring water and sun protection, as there is little shade on the walls.
