Christiania, 1407 København K, Denmark
Open in Google Maps →Freetown Christiania is one of the most unusual neighborhoods in all of Europe, a self-proclaimed autonomous community occupying a former military barracks in the heart of Copenhagen’s Christianshavn district. Established by squatters in 1971, this 34-hectare enclave has evolved into a vibrant, car-free community of around 900 residents who live by their own set of rules and maintain a fiercely independent spirit that has fascinated and divided Danish society for decades.
Behind the iconic entrance gate, visitors discover a world of wildly creative architecture, lush community gardens, handmade houses, art studios, and organic eateries. The neighborhood’s buildings are covered in colorful murals and street art, and live music drifts from venues like the legendary Loppen concert hall. Christiania’s residents have built an impressive array of community facilities including a blacksmith forge, recycling workshops, and a thriving food scene featuring everything from vegan cafes to wood-fired pizza.
Pro tip: Join one of the official guided tours led by Christiania residents to gain genuine insight into the community’s history, struggles, and daily life.
