Best time: Early morning for clear skies and fewer crowds

Standing 30 metres tall atop Corcovado Mountain, Christ the Redeemer is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The iconic art deco statue overlooks all of Rio de Janeiro, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the city, Sugarloaf Mountain, and Guanabara Bay.

The journey up by cog train through the Tijuca Forest is an experience in itself, passing through one of the world’s largest urban rainforests.

Pro tip: Take the cog train from Cosme Velho rather than a van — the ride through the rainforest is spectacular. Go early on a clear day for the best panoramic views.
