Doi Suthep Temple
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Srivijaya, Mueang Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai 50200, Thailand
Open in Google Maps →Perched on a forested mountain 1,676 meters above Chiang Mai, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the most sacred temple in northern Thailand and the spiritual symbol of the entire region. A dramatic 306-step naga-flanked staircase climbs through a canopy of ancient trees to reach the temple complex, where a gleaming golden chedi (stupa) enshrines a relic of the Buddha and dominates the skyline. The terrace surrounding the chedi is adorned with ornate parasols, bronze bells, and elaborate murals telling the story of the templeβs founding β according to legend, a white elephant carrying the sacred relic climbed this very mountain, trumpeted three times, and collapsed, marking the spot where the temple should be built. On clear days, the panoramic terrace offers sweeping views over the entire Chiang Mai valley and the patchwork of rice paddies below.
Pro tip: Visit during the Visakha Bucha festival (May full moon) when thousands of devotees carry candles in a spectacular evening procession around the golden chedi β it is one of the most moving spiritual experiences in Thailand.
