Best time: Early morning for the softest light on the blue walls, or golden hour before sunset

Nestled in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, Chefchaouen is one of the most photogenic towns on Earth. Its old medina is painted in every imaginable shade of blue, from powder blue doorways to deep indigo walls, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere that draws photographers and travelers from around the world.

Founded in 1471, the town’s blue tradition has various explanations β€” some say Jewish refugees painted buildings blue to symbolize the sky and heaven, others believe the color keeps mosquitoes away or simply keeps the buildings cool. Whatever the reason, the effect is mesmerizing. Beyond the famous blue streets, Chefchaouen offers hiking trails into the surrounding Rif Mountains, a relaxed mountain-town pace, and some of Morocco’s best goat cheese and woven blankets.

Pro tip: Stay overnight rather than visiting as a day trip. The town is at its most magical in the early morning before tour groups arrive and in the evening when the blue walls glow warm under the streetlights.
