Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial
Więźniów Oświęcimia 20, 32-603 Oświęcim, Poland
Open in Google Maps →Auschwitz-Birkenau is the largest and most harrowing of the Nazi German concentration and extermination camps, now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a memorial to the more than 1.1 million people who perished here during the Holocaust. The site consists of two main parts: Auschwitz I, the original camp with its infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” gate, and the vast Birkenau (Auschwitz II) camp, where the majority of mass killings took place.
Walking through the barracks, gas chambers, and exhibition halls filled with personal belongings of the victims is an overwhelming and deeply moving experience. The memorial serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of hatred and the importance of remembrance. Visitors are urged to approach this site with the solemnity and respect it demands.
Pro tip: Book a guided tour well in advance through the official museum website, as free entry without a guide is only available during limited early morning and late afternoon hours. Allow at least three and a half hours for both camps, and note that a free shuttle bus connects Auschwitz I to Birkenau.
