Sagano, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8394, Japan
Open in Google Maps →The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyotoβs most iconic natural wonders. Walking through the towering bamboo stalks that reach up to 30 meters high creates an otherworldly experience β the light filters through in shifting green patterns, and the sound of the wind rustling through the bamboo has been voted one of the top 100 soundscapes in Japan by the Ministry of Environment.
The main path runs for about 500 meters through the densest section of the grove, connecting the area near Tenryu-ji Temple to Okochi Sanso villa garden. The surrounding Arashiyama district is equally enchanting, with the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge, traditional rickshaw rides, monkey park on the mountainside, and numerous smaller temples tucked into the hillside.
Pro tip: Arrive at dawn for an almost meditative experience walking through the grove in near solitude. Combine your visit with nearby Tenryu-ji Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and its stunning garden with mountain backdrop.
